NB: The fact that … NB: The fact that China and Iran have fewer people incarcerated may not be entirely due to leniency.
Also NB: Stephen is describing a California state law; in federal offenses, the third strike must be a violent felony, and in most states where it doesn’t have to be, you just get the maximum, so petty shoplifting would get you (in Massachusetts) thirty months and $600. A bit harsh, but we’re talking about someone who’s earned separate 3+-year sentences…
This is a short … This is a short clip from a documentary that explains why our prison pop. is so high for all those that want to understand. Keep in mind that statistically blacks, whites, & Latinos deal and use drugs at similar rates. Blacks make up 13% of drug users(which is around the same # of the black pop. in US) & yet comprise of 35% of drug offenders in prison. Most of the prison pop. is their for nonviolent drug crime.

@joshig1983 The … @joshig1983 The problem is when that is coupled with the disproportionate number of citizens imprisoned, it gives the impression they are sending people to prison for trivial crimes just for the free “slave” labour.
@mix7mastering,
Yep … @mix7mastering,
Yep, you hit the nail right on the head. Every “crime” in America which can possibly be made a felony charge, will be, so as many citizens as possible can be declared Prohibited Persons. A Prohibited Person cannot own a gun or even one round of fixed ammo, without the government stealing everything the owner has, and kidnapping the owner and sending him to prison for a long time.
@Yousuckatlifeyou … @Yousuckatlifeyou Yes you are correct, the law system is based around profit, which is why so many are in prison. All crimes are treated as a commercial entity within Admiralty Law/Maritime Law (contracts), they are not treated fairly within Natural Law-Common Law. When Bush Sr. said on 9-11-91 that they would have a New World Order without “the law of the jungle”, he was referring to the final removal of Natural Law and Natural Rights.
I agree in … I agree in principle, but it is dangerous for a society to have a profitable jail business because it provides economic incentive to imprison citizens.
The problem is that … The problem is that to the outside world it looks like they are imprisoning people for profit. If they didn’t make so much money from the prisoners then I highly doubt they would be willing to send so many people to prison.
Maybe some. but … Maybe some. but most criminals here come from a loving family and just go out robbing peoples phones and houses. I just dont think love is something they deserve as there punishment…
If they can make … If they can make money off the shoulders of criminals, no one should stop them. It isn’t slavery to have a profitable incarceration business. It is just smart.
As much as that … As much as that seems idealistically nice. i dont think compassion, forgiveness are things criminals deserve nor do i think it would help in rehabilitation BUT what do we know aye?! im sure they are doing the best job thats possible =]
Mmm…………. … Mmm………….Prison pop1973= 300,000. Pop in 2000= 2,000,000. The prison industry complex is one the fastest growing indusries in America. The prime investors being Wall Street………enough said.
huh? first of all, … huh? first of all, the harshness of prison is not a deterrent…if it was, there wouldn’t be a 70 % recidivism rate…the prisons that we have now are harsh enough…you can’t fight fire with fire…that doesn’t work…taking a criminal and throwing him in with other criminals doesn’t help him or society…you need compassion, forgiveness, education for these offenders, that’s the only way society benefits
Yeh everyone in … Yeh everyone in prison is innocent. sure…. ¬.¬
Slavery? NO im pro justice. Pro punishment. ANTI CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR. im not a redneck who wants to bring back hanging i just think if punishments were harsher and prison wasnt just a free bed for a few years people would stop breaking the law.
But who cares like we’re going to make a difference.
